Wat Phraram 9 Kanchanapisek | Third Class Royal Temple | Presiding Buddha Image: Phra Buddha Kanchana Dhamma Sathit | Important Temple in the reign of King Rama IX Phrabat Somdet Phra Poramintharamaha Bhumibol Adulyadej
Wat Phraram 9 Kanchanapisek was built according to His Majesty the King’s initiative to propagate the teachings of Buddhism. The temple came after of his Majesty’s one of many royal projects to solve the polluted water in Lad Prao cannel in Rama 9 area. The cannel originated from Rangsit cannel pass Saphan Mai (Don Mueang), Bang Sue, Sam Sen and end at Ladprao before flow through Samsen cannel.
In 1987, the King Bhumibol initiated a royal project called ‘kang han nam Chai Pattana’ , It is a machine that could generate more oxygen into a cannel or river or in this case a lagoon. Part of the land belonged to the crown property Bureau. Our King Bhumibol’s intention for Rama 9 temple is to be the heart of the Buddhism community. The temple is a Third class Royal temple, it was located on number 999, Soi 9, Phraram 9 road. It was built in 1987, in 1988 Princess Sirindrone went to the temple for the monastic boundary and the ceremony of laying the foundation stone.
The temple ground is estimated 8 rai 2 narn 54 tarangwa , part the land was given by Mrs. Jungian Singhasenee to Chaipattana foundation. The first abbot of the temple was Phra Tepyanvisit . Wat Phraram 9 Kanjanapisek is the full name of the temple, the name was given by his Majesty the King Bhumibol. The temple have many differences from others tradition Buddhist temples. The temple is not big or grand and had minimal budget to built, even the design of the temple is a modern style with lots of white colour symbolising pureness, cleanliness, and simplicity.
The Ubosot (main hall) has a modern / contemporary style with focus on functional of the building. It can hold up to 100 people. The influence of the Ubosot was from three main important temples in Thailand: the pillars in the ubosot from Wat Raja Thiwat, the roof from Phra Pathom Jedi in Nakhon Pathom, and the front decoration from Wat Chalearm Phrakeiat in Nonthabiri.
All the materials to built the temple were local’s. There were no gold plated decoration in the Ubosot. The main Buddha image in the Uposatha was created by a Thai artists. The Prang Marnvichai (Prang ChanaMarn) the style of Buddha image was influenced of the Rattanakosin’s period of Buddha images, the height is 180 centimetres , materials for the Prang Marnvichai were brass and gold. The name for the main Buddha image in the Uposatha was given by his majesty the king : Phra Buddha Kanchana Dhamma Sathit. The main Buddha image has the Jeworn or monk’s clothing covered the body.
Somdet Phra Yannasangwon, the Buddhist Supreme Patriarch of all Buddhist priests is the patron president (monk’s side), and H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is the patron of the layman side.
From a royal project to temple, a simple but useful great space temple, for the community. We can clearly see that this is only a touch of His Majesty the king Bhumibol’s greatness. His vision that all Thai people should follow is the self-Sufficient Economy. It is an ideal of living and a quest of finding a happy and sustainable life.
